A community skate plaza that was designed as part of a larger master plan for the neighborhood and part of the The Alley Project(TAP) and the 8869 Avis building which act as the HQ for Inside Southwest Detroit, a non-profit community organization completed in 2016. The park continues the long-term project that is using alleys and vacant lots to weave together the community.
As part of the project a community design engagement (facilitated by Detroit Collaborative Design Center) was used to engage past stakeholder groups. The initial program came from the initial stakeholder meetings which people were excited to have a multipurpose space. Program such as skate park, festival stage, gardening, marketplace, water park, picnic area, drove the design of the park by creating flexible zones so multiple groups can use the space at the same time.
Plaza Villalobos just down the street, connected via the alley developments, will host community functions through a variety of programming. The plaza will be used for festivals and serve as community market place.
